BEATLE’S PLEA FULFILLED – 50 YEARS LATER – City of Seattle Resolution offers Condemnation/Video Added

Written in January 2020

August 1st, 1971 represents a turning point in the history of Progressive Humanitarianism. For the first time name and fame were harnessed for the direct benefit of the nameless and forgotten. This was the Concert for Bangladesh and it was the first major benefit concert in history.

Former Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr along with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and the band Badfinger along with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Alla Rakha Qureshi and Kamala Chakravarty gathered together on behalf of the suffering people of Bangladesh. Working with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) the effort raised millions of dollars on behalf of the refugees of the 1971 Bangladesh war and famine.

It was a truly historic moment that has been recognized as “a brief incandescent revival of all that was best about the Sixties” Rolling Stone Magazine. Billboard magazine, “no politics involved. What is involved is starving children and for once, relief through 35 musicians who should represent the feeling of anyone who loves their music.”

Bangladeshi historian Farida Majid,”the “warmth, care and goodwill” of the August 1971 concerts “echoed all over the world.” Many were inspired to volunteer with UNICEF while others offered private donations to the Bangladesh disaster fund.

In June 1972 UNICEF honored George Harrison and Ravi Shankar with the “Child Is the Father of the Man” award for their ‘pioneering’ fundraising efforts for the refugees of Bangladesh. Bob Geldof also publicly acknowledged The Concert for Bangladesh as the inspiration for his 1985 Live Aid event recently highlighted in the film Bohemian Rhapsody.

In the aftermath of the Concert for Bangladesh, however, politics and the US government reared their ugly heads. Thus a majority of the charitable funds were held up in an IRS escrow account for 10 years before being released to the refugees of Bangladesh. Now on Feb 3rd, this coming Monday, the City of Seattle may add its dose of cold cynical dehumanizing politics to the lives of these very same refugees.

Read on to connect the dots.

Despite the efforts of George Harrison and company, the suffering and trauma has not ended for the victims of the Bangladesh crisis. 49 years later, thousands of Bangladeshi Refugees have remained Stateless. The Indian Government and the world’s various Human Rights organizations seemed powerless to help.

As an avid Beatle’s fan, amateur historian, community organizer and cultural activist I was keen to investigate the conditions of the people Harrison was so moved to help. Beyond sitting comfortable in Seattle, scanning Wikipedia for information, I personally went to Kolkata and West Bengal, India. Travelling the Indo-Bangladeshi border regions i met these people face to face. I saw the ground reality and put the faces of real human beings to the reports and statistics.

Screen Cap from my interview video with the Bangladeshi Hindu Refugees

During my 3 weeks there, I met hundreds of Hindu refugees living in squalor. With no land of their own, to this day they live in ramshackle structures hanging shelf-like above sewage clogged streams and river canals. I interviewed many victims of ethnic cleansing, rape and genocide. Heartbreaking scenes of helpless people holding pictures of murdered loved ones, copies of police and news reports confirming their accounts of violence, rape, land-loss, ethnic cleansing and mass murder. I was ashamed to the point of helplessness.

As a White American they assumed help was finally on its way for undoubtedly I could share their reports with the US President. I cried with them as they cried helplessly. Through the interpreter I had to gently reveal my inability to do anything beyond record their information and hopefully get the attention of others capable of helping to take note of their plight.

This was nearly 8 years ago. Beyond uploading their interviews to Youtube, I have been unable to help them.

Last December the Indian Government passed the CAA or Citizen Amendment Act. Finally the Indian Government was giving them full citizenship! My heart jumped for joy. Finally these suffering people for whom a Beatle appealed and the world soon forgot not only have a chance to live but can now thrive in their adopted homes.

Yet the world being what it is, and Indian politics, perhaps the world’s most tumultuous and chaotic, began to convulse. The Indian Government for its part clumsily enacted the bill ignoring the bad optics of the easily misconstrued Religious identity clause. Yet despite this, in the end, for all intents and purposes, the bill directly and positively impacts the lives of the Bangladeshi Refugees.

While the Muslim Bangladeshis gained an entire new country, The People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the worlds 8th most populated country, it is overwhelmingly Muslim and is politically and socially Islamic. It is in fact the site of the 2nd largest Islamic religious gathering in the world. Obviously Bangladeshi Muslims have a safe place to call home.

Meanwhile the non-Muslim minorities that fled Bangladesh remained stateless. This CAA bill once and for all finally addresses this disparity.

Despite the great strides made by the Bangladeshi Government, Bangladeshi minorities continue to flee to India. There is obviously no safe space for them thus they flee.

Even today as the world rallies to the support of the Rohingya Muslims, Burmese Rohingya Hindus are denied help in Bangladeshi refugee camps for they rank lowest on the social totem pole. And in India thousands upon thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus remained Stateless, landless, forgotten living in squalid refugee camps. Finally more than 49 years after the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, this CAA bill represents the first glimmer of hope in their lives.

Thus for me, having actually met these people, having seen their plight and knowing their suffering first hand, I can accurately recognize this as a true fulfillment of the Humanitarian promise initiated by George Harrison’s concern made real by his Concert for Bangladesh.

In the 1970s and 1980s the US Government and IRS cold-heartedly withheld millions of dollars of Bangladeshi refugee funds. Now once again a branch of the US government is set to proclaim to the entire world and to these very same suffering Refugees that they do not count. In fact, in the words of the refugees, they see it as ethnic and ideologically based hatred coming from the USA. Good going Seattle!

How is this happening?! A resolution to be voted on Feb 3rd by the Seattle City Council is the culprit. Council member Kshama Sawant’s cold hearted politically calculated bill, while speaking high sounding words of concern and humanitarianism is in fact a cynical weaponized tool that dehumanizes an entire people. Beyond that it enables mass rape, ethnic cleansing and genocide for it attacks the final positive resolution that has finally brought hope into the lives of the victims involved.

By totally ignoring the Bangladeshi Refugees, Sawant’s resolution dehumanizes them for it loudly proclaims that their concerns are irrelevant and their suffering unworthy of mention what to speak of mitigation.

While the Indian Government was admittedly clumsy in its presentation of the CAA bill, if Progressive Seattle wants to respond, it can and must do better.

As the largest US city named after an Indigenous personality, Chief Se’ahl, Seattle is currently a leader in promoting equality and justice for all and in the recognition of the tragedies experienced by indigenous people. And these Bangladeshi Refugees are as indigenous as one can get.

Will Seattle now be at the forefront of condemning a living Indigenous community to irrelevance? Will the City of Seattle put the knife in their hearts by condemning their chance for a life of dignity by officially censuring the CAA as an act of hatred? Will the City of Seattle allow itself to be abused as a weapon in the ideological rivalries of chaotic and traumatised South Asian politics? Is the City of Seattle about to enact its own form of official dehumanization exemplified by the US Federal governments seizure of Bangladeshi charitable funds for these very same refugees?

It is a fact that strong emotions can cloud the mind and hijack reason. This resolution presented by Kshama Sawant appears to count on that. It is unscrupulous for it abuses our collective sense of fairplay and compassion in an attempt to punish Sawant’s ideological rivals in India.

Yet when seen through the prism of the thousands of very real human beings I met who are now benefiting from the CAA it is imperative to recognize what it truly means on the human level.

Therefore I urge the City of Seattle to reject this bill. Kshama Sawant is misleading our community in her attempt to harness our goodwill as a political weapon. Her resolution de-personizes an entire people. It is not representative of our Seattle. If passed it will represent a tragic betrayal of the humanitarian and compassionate ethos at the heart of our city.

It is in fact a direct rejection of the 1960s peace and love anti-war and Universal Goodwill exemplified by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar’s Concert for Bangladesh for it condemns the upliftment of the very same people their concert was meant to help.

If the city of Seattle truly wants to address the various humanitarian traumas that have long plagued South Asia, and if the City of Seattle is truly sincere about the human rights of all people, then the city of Seattle must officially offer these long-suffering Bangladeshi refugees asylum.

The current resolution as it stands now, is severely flawed and if passed will be trumpeted throughout India causing further anguish and traumatization of the Bangladeshi refugees. Is that truly the message the City of Seattle wants to send them?

Seems impossible for it is not a true reflection of our Seattle. Clearly it would be a heart breaking step backwards in our Collective efforts towards building a truly compassionate and socially responsible Society.

Caitanya’s Bhakti Movement Empowers India & Humanity

Sri Sri Chaitanya and Nityananda’s Congregational Chanting of Krishna’s Holy Names

Recently on the FHRS (Foundation for Hindu Religious Studies) forum a scholar was questioning the value of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s Bhakti Movement. I wont get into the ‘religious’ aspects of the post doubting whether Chaitanya is truly an avatar of Krsna. However the lack of recognition to the global and immense impact of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s message must be responded to. I recognize the angst of many Hindus regarding the long term trauma and ongoing injustices perpetrated against India’s Dharmic traditions. However it is not helpful to denigrate our own traditions, avatars, sampradayas and gurus and become confused as to the how, where, why and what is truly behind the assault against Bharat Mata and its culture and civilization. First it must be understood that according to Gaudiya Siddhanta Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna as His own devotee. He came to teach us how to be devotees and how to function in an asuric society. He therefore came to teach us how to survive in the modern era. Running around with Chakras and swords is not an equitable approach. Yet empowering oneself with Bhakti Shakti is a path that is available to one and all.

We must keep in mind that India is not the entire world nor are Indians the only ones faced with oppression. Therefore Krsna came as Caitanya to guide the entire humanity towards perfection.

I must point out that if it were not for Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Prabhupada I personally would not be a Vedic Follower what to speak of a being a Vedic activist. Therefore I am forever grateful to them for their message and mission to bring the teachings of India’s Vaishnava culture to the entire world.

In fact many aspects of social awareness and a common acceptance of higher human values amongst non-Indian peoples can be directly connected to the mission of Prabhupada/Chaitanya. This legacy is intentionally downplayed and ignored by mainstream academia and social scientists. Yet it is a fact. Thus from that fact alone Chaitanya’s legacy is profound.

In fact many aspects of social awareness and a common acceptance of higher human values amongst non-Indian peoples can be directly connected to the mission of Srila Prabhupad and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This legacy is intentionally downplayed and ignored by mainstream academia and social scientists. Yet it is a fact. Thus from that fact alone Chaitanya’s legacy is profound.

As for the Islamic issue: We can look at it from both the short term and long term perspectives. In both cases we find that the path chalked out by Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is quite effective. In the episodes that are widely known in which Caitanya or His contemporary followers had direct interactions with Muslim leaders, we find that rather than submission He conquered with Love.

First incident involved the Chand Kazi in Navadweep, Bengal. After receiving complaints from some caste-conscious Brahmins that Caitanya was spoiling the Hindu religion the Kazi banned public sankirtan. The Hindu priests were disturbed by Caitanya’s freely welcoming Hindus of all castes as equals and His welcoming Muslims as well into his Harinam Sankirtan mission. Caitanya’s repsonse was not to merely turn the other cheek and accept injustice. Rather He organized a massive civil disobedience march and a huge rally that culminated in front of the Kazi’s residence. In fear for his life the Kazi hid himself but Caitanya Mahaprabhu soothed his fears and arranged a direct face to face meeting.

In this meeting Caitanya Mahaprabhu was lovingly blunt and He challenged the Kazi by telling him that his scripture, the Quran was full of delusions. In the end the Kazi vowed to never dirsupt the Sankirtan movement and even held his descendants to the vow. In fact the Kazi and his family members became committed followers of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s mission. To this day the tomb of the Kazi is a place of pilgrimage for the Gaudiya Vaishnavas.

“In another incident two of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s most important followers Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana Goswamis were the high ministers for the Nawab of Bengal. Since this Nawab was intent on attacking Orrisa and other Hindu Kingdoms, they left his service.

Chaitanya Meets the Muslim Ruler of Navadweep

“The Moslem emperor of Gauda desh, Nawab Hussein Shah, keen to spread his influence on the local people, conscripted the two brothers into his service, by threatening tribulations on the local people if they did not agree to work for him. Much against their desire, the brothers worked in prominent positions in the Shah’s court. However as pure devotees, they used their wealth and energies in the service of Krishna, by constructing an opulent ‘hidden Vrindavan’ in Ramakeli, immersed themselves in the reading of the Bhagvatam and perfecting their own realizations.” They used their positions to employ many Brahmins and organized many Hindu events.

In other words they used their positions to empower Hindu culture following a path of least resistance.

Haridas Thakur in the arms of sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Haridas Thakur in the arms of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Haridas Thakur was another prominent follower of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is said he was either born in a Muslim family or adopted into one at a very young age. Either way he was considered by the Muslim rulers as an apostate for renouncing his Islamic heritage and was sentenced to death.

“The Nawab rebuked Hari Das, saying, “Chant the names of God as they are found in your own religion and stop practicing other peoples’ religion. If you don’t, you will have to face a very severe punishment.” Hari Das Thakur answered with conviction:
khanda khanda haï deha jay jadi prana tabu ami vadane na charii hari-nama

“You may cut my body to pieces, and the life may leave it. But I will never abandon the Holy Name which my tongue will ever continue to chant.”
(Chaitanya Bhagavat 16.91)

Hearing this the Nawab ordered Haridas to be publicly beaten to death. “He should be given such a severe punishment that other Muslims will be afraid to convert.”

After being beaten in 22 marketplaces his body was flung into the Ganges. To everyone’s surprise, Hari Das floated to the other shore where he climbed onto dry land and started chanting the Holy Names in a loud voice, walking in the direction of Phuliya. Both the Nawab and the Kazi realized that he was a real saint or pir and they fell to the ground in obeisances and begged him for forgiveness. By his grace, they were able to become free of their evil misdeeds. The Nawab gave Hari Das official permission to go wherever he pleased and to chant the Holy Names.

Vrndavan Das Thakur writes that Caitanya Mahaprabhu was so outraged by this attack on His devotee that He was prepared to kill the Nawab and his henchment. Yet it was Haridas thakur who stopped Him. Thus we see that despite the efforts of the Muslim rulers to hinder the Sankirtan movement, by the strategy of Mahaprabhu and His followers, such efforts always backfired. By these responses the faith in the Hindu traditions were reinforced in the hearts and minds of millions of people. Considering time and circumstances is crucial when confronting imbalances. Caitanya Mahaprabhu perfectly dealt with all situations in an equitable manner.

In another incident, during Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit to the Vrndavan/Mathura area He fainted in ecstasy upon hearing the sounds of flute playing reminiscent of Lord Krsna. Some Muslim Pathan soldiers came upon Him and seeing Him unconscious in the company of His followers they assumed that He had been poisoned. They accused Mahaprabhu’s associates of being dacoits who were in the midst of murdering and robbing Caitanya.

Pathan Soldiers Suspected Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had been Drugged and Robbed

The following clearly highlights the fearless yet nonviolent bhakti shakti which was a common feature of Caitanya and His followers. “The Sanoriya Brahmin explained to the Pathan as follows: “I am a Brahmin from Mathura and I know hundreds of people in the Emperor’s court. This sannyasi is my guru and he happens to be ill, which makes him faint from time to time. Tie us up and wait for a few minutes. He will regain consciousness and you will hear the truth from him.” The Pathan listened and said, “I can understand what you two are saying. You are from Mathura, but these two Bengalis are trembling with guilt. They must have done something wrong.” The Rajaputa Krishna Das was acutely aware of the danger of the situation and said, “I live in the neighboring village. I have two hundred Turkish mercenaries with a hundred cannons at my command. I only have to shout and they will come here and take your horses and equipment. I think that you must be highwaymen, not these two Bengalis. You are only interested in robbing pilgrims like us.” The Muslim cavalrymen were cast into doubt by these fearless words. Meanwhile, the Lord came back to consciousness and in a transport of ecstasy, shouted out the names “Hari! Hari!” and began to dance. The Pathan soldiers were overcome by fear when they heard the Lord bellow and saw his ecstatic dancing. They immediately liberated their four prisoners and the Lord never saw his devotees tied up.”

In the end, Mahaprabhu opened the hearts of the Muslims and thus they became His devout followers. The Sufi Pathan began spontaneously to chant the names of Krishna. When Mahaprabhu heard the saintly Muslim chant the Lord’s names, he was pleased, thinking that all the sins that he had accumulated over millions of births had all been destroyed and that he had been purified. The Lord told them all to chant, which they did. He initiated the Sufi Pathan in the holy name and gave him the name Rama Das. When the prince Bijali Khan saw the good fortune of his own servant, he fell down at the Lord’s feet and repeated the name, “Krishna, Krishna.” The Lord also blessed him. “After bestowing his mercy upon them in this way, Mahaprabhu continued on his way. All the Muslim soldiers then became mendicants and were celebrated as the Pathan Vasihnavas. They toured all over the country, glorifying Mahaprabhu’s activities. Bijali Khan became a greatly advanced devotee, and his fame was sung at every holy place of pilgrimage.”

Rather than meekly accepting things as they are Caitanya directly challenged those born in Bharat, India.
bharata-bhumite haila manusya janma yarae

Arabic Bhagavad Gita By AC Bhaktivedanta Swami PrabhupadaArabic Consciousness the Missing Link

When we look at the impact of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s movement in the long term we see that it has done more than any other branch of Hinduism in sharing its culture with the Islamic world. Prabhupda’s Iskcon Movement has made many inroads whether thru books  Arab Bhagavad Gita or the Manipuri Rasa Lila dancers tour of the Middle East. With crowds of 5-10 thousand people in attendance… “There was no objection from anyone to our chanting hare krishna (we even managed to make the audience repeat “Hare  Krishna!” after we greeted them in their tradition with “Salaamualaikum”, “Ham
dulllah”! It was ecstatic..”
The Arabic Druze-Krsna center established in Osafia, Israel. The Druze Sheikh Hussein said, “Since we stepped on the holy land of Mayapur, India we felt that we were coming home….”We are very eager to visit the Ganges, because we have heard that simply by touching the water to our heads we will be freed of all sins.” These are all direct results of Prabhupada’s preaching on behalf of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Srila Prabhupada in Speaks with Scholars in Iran

Srila Prabhupada Speaks with Scholars in Tehran Iran

We also find that during Prabhupada’s world tours, he visited Iran twice and was received with great respect. Even the former Shah of Iran and his family began studying yoga and reading his books. In fact it has been suggested that the the Khomeini was a direct response to the rising influence of Vedic culture amongst the people of Iran.

What to speak of the Muslim world, it is directly due to the mission of Sri Caitanya Dev that Hindu-Vedic culture and ethos are practiced throughout the world.

There is more than one way to success and more than one way to deal with oppression. The path of physical violence has a place at times. However we find that India’s own history has shown that despite the brilliant military successes of Shivaji, the Sikhs, Netaji and others or the political approach of Gandhi none compare to the long term success of Caitanya’s methods.  I must also highlight the teachings of Maharashi and his movement have made great inroads throughout the world through the application of India’s ‘Soft Power.”

More than any so-called Eunichism of the Bhakti movement, it was the oppression of caste conscious fanatics that imposed an unyielding and inhumane system upon the people of India. Trapped into their enforced roles amongst society it was easy to entice millions of Hindus to convert to Islam and Christianity and now Communism.

It also important to note that the same Islamic invasions and Colonial imperialism were not solely an Indian affair. In fact looking at it from a global perspective we find that throughout the entire world India is the only surviving and functioning remnant of the world’s ancient indigenous civilizations. Why is this?

Looking at it from a logical perspective I see only two ways to explain this phenomenon. India’s immense population is a source of power and a formidable method for maintaining its traditions. However population alone can not account for India’s cultural survival thus we see that China has barely maintained its cultural identity. Much more significant than its population are those very traditions of India that make India what it is. Paramount amongst those traditions are the Bhakti traditions of India.

In conclusion I hold the exact opposite view regarding the impact of Bhakti on India’s people. Bhakti is Shakti. This is obvious when we compare China and India. Each Bhakta is a powerhouse of commitment and Dharma. Magnify this by the millions and we have a people and a Nation that is vibrant and dynamic. India is far from defeated and the ongoing attacks on India’s Dharmic Soul are evidence of this. For what other reason would the enemies of Hinduism repeatably carry out terror attacks on Mandirs and other Bhakti based sites? They obviously recognize the power of Bhakti as a major obstacle to the destruction of Hinduism! The opposition recognizes that as long as Bharat is a land of millions of Bhaktas it will never succeed in its goals of conquest. Bhakti is the shield of Bharat. Bhakti is the foundation of Bharat! Bhakti is the future hope of the entire world. Bhakti is the beating heart of humanity and nourishes the Soul.  As long as India has Bhakti it will not only survive but it will be prosperous, vibrant and continue to be the shining light of the world.

By 2020 India to be ‘Unrivalled Power’ – 2005 US Intel Report

16 year old Report: US Intel Geopolitical and Economic Assessment of India in the year 2020. “The global community will have to deal with the military, political and economic dimensions of the rise of China and India…” US National Intelligence Council, Feb 2005 Forecast on India in the year 2020.

“The US NIC (National Intelligence Council) also forecast that India, China and Russia could form a de facto geo-strategic alliance in an attempt to counter-balance US and western influence.” (No Indian leader can even consider such repartee with China  now = Covid – an undeniable multi-level impact)

“India will be the unrivalled regional power with a large military — including naval and nuclear capabilities — and a dynamic and growing economy,” National Intelligence Council, NIC which represents 15 spy agencies of the US including the CIA.

Connect the Dots. India has endured the impacts of asymmetrical warfare longer than any other nation in the history of the world. Wake Up Bharatiyas! Throw off your Naivety! These Intel Agency Forecasts are not developed for mere scholarly pursuits. They are in fact used as templates designed to effect the outcome of the targeted nation.

The decades of ‘ death by a thousand cuts’ strategy against India was squashed by the election of PM Narendra Modi. Being inter-dependent, both the endless Terror attacks and the former Sonia Gandhi – Singh Administration ceased to function with the election of Modi.

Representing the first truly indigenous geo-political power to rise up in over 500 years; India, is the 6th greatest power in the world today; a near match to the West and it’s western oriented subsidiaries.

Have no doubt about it, your nation is currently being confronted by the most diabolical phase in a centuries-long campaign to obliterate the World’s last remaining and functioning indigenous civilization. Vedic civilization is undoubtedly your heritage yet it is the legacy for all Mankind.

Burning your pilgrims in trains, machine gun attacks on your Parliament, bombing massacres bat temples, mosques and churches all failed to derail you! Your Faith was never shaken! Now, your collective faith and your traditions, your cultures, your spiritual and indigenous political leaders has been shaken to the core.

Unlike any other civilization you have maintained your direct connectivity to the ancestors. Long before the pyramids arose in the sands of Egypt, the people of India offered oblations to the Sun, hands uplifted with the Sacred Water of the Ganges.

As the World’s last remaining Indigenous Civilization you represent the last hope for Humanity! Do Not Be Fooled! Ignore the Narrative designed to destroy your civilization once and for all. Hari Om! Satyameva Jayate!

PS Even if your Native leaders erred in judgement, only the foolish can doubt their intentions for a prosperous, vibrant India. The current Indian Administration has an undeniable track record of progressive policies that simultaneously uplifted the lives of millions while reviving the ancient indigenous traditions. The alternative is a return to dysfunctionality, poverty and lives of mundane mediocrity and base consumerism.

Washington, February 24, 2005: India will emerge as an “unrivalled” regional power with large military capabilities in the next 15 years but its “rising ambition” would further strain its relations with China besides complicating ties with Russia and Japan, America’s National Intelligence Council has said in a report.

“India will be the unrivalled regional power with a large military — including naval and nuclear capabilities — and a dynamic and growing economy,” the NIC, which represents 15 spy agencies of the US including the CIA, has said in its global trends forecast for 15 years.

“The size of its population — 1.2 billion by 2015 — and its technologically driven economic growth virtually dictate that India will be a rising regional power,” it said. However, the report said that the unevenness of its internal economic growth, with a growing gap between rich and poor, and serious questions about the fractious nature of its politics, all cast doubt on how powerful India will be by 2015

“Whatever its degree of power, India’s rising ambition will further strain its relations with China, as well as complicate its ties with Russia, Japan and the West — and continue its nuclear standoff with Pakistan,” it said. Moreover, other South Asian states — Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal — will be drawn closer to and more dependent on India and its economy. Afghanistan will likely remain a weak and destabilising force in the region and the world.

Wary of China, India will look increasingly to the West, but its need for oil and desire to balance Arab ties to Pakistan will lead to strengthened ties to persian Gulf states as well. The NIC also forecast that India, China and Russia could form a de facto geo-strategic alliance in an attempt to counter-balance US and western influence.

Noting that the interests of Russia, China and India, as well as Iran and Turkey will intersect in central Asia, it said the states of that region will attempt to balance those powers as well as keep the US and the West engaged to prevent their domination by an outside power.

On other fronts, it said Indian democracy will remain strong, albeit more factionalised by the secular-Hindu nationalist debate, growing differentials among regions and the increase in competitive party politics.

On the economic front, it said India’s economy, long repressed by the heavy hand of regulation, is likely to achieve sustained growth to the degree reforms are implemented.

High-technology companies will be the most dynamic agents and will lead the thriving service sector in four key urban centres — Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. Computer software services and customised applications will continue to expand as India strengthens economic ties to key international markets. Industries such as pharmaceuticals and agro-processing will also compete globally.

It said numerous factors provide India a competitive advantage in the global economy including the largest English-speaking population in the developing world; its education system which produces millions of scientific and technical personnel.

It also noted that India has a growing business-minded middle class eager to strengthen ties to the outside world, and the large Indian expatriate population provides strong links to key markets around the world.

However, despite the rapid growth, more than half a billion Indians will remain in dire poverty, the NIC says. Harnessing technology to improve agriculture will be India’s main challenge in alleviating poverty in 2015.

The widening Gulf between “have” and “have-not” regions and disagreements over the pace and nature of reforms will be a source of domestic strife.

Rapidly growing, poorer northern states will continue to drain resources in subsidies and social welfare benefits. Failure by India to implement its reforms would prevent it from achieving sustained growth.

AIDS will be a major problem not only in Africa but also in India, southeast Asia, several countries formerly part of the Soviet Union, and possibly China.

Among developing countries, India will remain in the forefront in developing information technology, led by the growing class of high-tech workers and entrepreneurs. Emerging Asia will be the fastest growing region, led by breakout candidates China and India, whose economies already comprise roughly one-sixth of the global gross domestic product.

The global community will have to deal with the military, political and economic dimensions of the rise of China and India and the continued decline of Russia. END

As I research Hinduism and East Indian culture am finding many startling similarities between the “Lakota” people and the Tamil People of South India. For example the aarti and puja offerings-Aarti in in my language means to build an elevated place to pray and Puja means ‘thirst. and pujapi means ‘they thirst. It is the ceremony of the pouring, offering and worship of the water-Maka We Le-Blood of the Mother or Earth Mother.

The Great Serpent Mound is the largest serpent effigy in the world. It is 1,348-foot-long (411 m),three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound on a plateau of the Serpent Mound crater in Adams County, Ohio, USA

Maka means Mother and it is the same word Mata for linguistically the letters ‘k’ and ‘t are interchangable. The Kentucky region of the USA is home to my ancestors and the mound where I live is the spring solstice wing of the Sacred Serpent Uncakila. Today by the will of the cre ator there is a Hindu temple in Louisville, Kentucky; it is a Vishnu -Shiva temple. Unknown to most is that it has been built on what was once a Native American temple mound of the Mandan Indian People. Surely it is not first time Vishnu or Shiva have been worshiped on that spot.

Charlie’s Grandfather John Fire Lame Deer

Charlie Lame Deer’s Grandfather, John Fire Lame Deer was a Mineconju-Lakota Sioux born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. His father was Silas Fire Let-Them-Have-Enough. His mother was Sally Red Blanket. He lived and learned with his grandparents until he was 6 or 7, after which he was placed in a day school near the family until age fourteen. He was then sent to a boarding school, one of many run by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs for Indian youth. These schools werpe designed to “civilize” the Native Americans after their forced settling on reservations.

Lame Deer’s life as a young man was rough and wild; he traveled and rode the rodeo circuit as a rider and later as a rodeo clown. According to his personal account, he drank, gambled, womanized, and once went on a several day long car theft and drinking binge. Eventually, he happened upon the house where the original peace pipe given to the Lakota by White Buffalo Calf Woman was kept; much to his surprise, the keeper of the pipe told Lame Deer she had been waiting for him for some time. This served as a turning point in Lame Deer’s life. He settled down and began his life as a wichasha wakan (“medicine man”, or more accurately, “holy man”).

Making his home at the Pine Ridge Reservation and traveling around the country, Lame Deer became known both among the Lakota and to the American public at a time when indigenous culture and spirituality were going through a period of rebirth and the psychedelic movement of the 1960s had yet to disintegrate. He often participated in American Indian Movement events, including sit-ins at the Black Hills, land legally belonging to the Lakota that had been taken back by the United States government after the discovery of gold. The Black Hills are considered to be the axis mundi or center of the world to the Lakota Indians.
